The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is an essential funding source for South African students attending public universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges. As the 2026 academic year approaches, both prospective and returning students need to know the application process, eligibility requirements, and important dates. The government has significantly increased its allocation for NSFA, committing to 2026 with further increases projected for 2027, which means more students from lower- and middle-income households will benefit from financial aid.

The NSFAS application period is anticipated to open on September 1, 2025, and close on January 31, 2026, for both university and TVET college applicants. This financial aid scheme aims to provide complete support, covering registration fees, tuition costs, and various allowances for accommodation, living expenses, transport, and study materials.

NSFAS also offers additional support, including assistive devices, for students with disabilities. To streamline the process, NSFAS is enhancing its online systems for easier applications, quicker feedback, and direct payment of allowances into student bank accounts. This guide aims to provide a complete overview to help students prepare for a successful NSFAS application in 2026
